Favourite Fridays - Blake (All My Friends)

Kicking off with soft repetitive piano and gradually building up to a slap of an electronic drum, signals in the symbols and the booming bass which all become louder and James Murphy blurts “ That’s how it starts”. This is All My Friends by LCD Soundsytem a former Dance-Punk outfit from America.

There is a majestic sound and emotion that All My Friends captures that is like no other, the layers of music are incredible and the way in which LCD build it up is bound to perhaps perfection. But it is the lyrics in which really control the song, set out in an almost poetic formation which explore an individual’s progress through life “You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan” and the almost forgettable subjects that we are “You forgot what you meant when you read what you said”.

The almost chaotic ending filled with bellowing guitar, repetitive piano, bass and drums, background filling synth, with Murphy merely shouting “If I could see all my friends tonight”.

If you witnessed LCD Soundsytem’s live show consider yourself very fortunate as tho they were one of the best live acts going around at the time before they decided to call it quits. All my friends is off their 2nd album ‘sounds of silver’.
